Dr. Julius Maada Bio
Born on 12 May 1964 in Tihun, Bonthe District, Julius Maada Bio is the son of a Paramount Chief and the first Sierra Leonean president born after independence.
A decorated military officer, he rose to Head of State by 1996 and, at just 32, made the rare decision to hand power to a democratically elected civilian government voluntarily. That act alone defined his democratic character before he ever held elected office.
He pursued further education in the United States and the United Kingdom, earning a Master’s in International Affairs and later researching Peace Studies at the University of Bradford. He contested the presidency in 2012 before winning decisively in 2018, and again in 2023.
His presidency has been anchored in one conviction: people first.
Free Quality Education for over one million children, abolition of the death penalty, a 30% quota for women in governance, and freedom of the press mark his most defining reforms.
Globally, he co-chaired the UN Transforming Education Summit, presided over the UN Security Council in 2024, and was elected President of ECOWAS in 2025.

Service Without Title
True leadership begins in humble places in the midnight vigil of a nurse, the steady hands of a miner, the patient guidance of a teacher. President Bio believes the truest measure of influence is quiet, steadfast service that requires no title and seeks no recognition. "Every Sierra Leonean is a leader in their sphere," he says.

Education is the Foundation
For President Bio, education is not a policy programme — it is a moral imperative. His administration has allocated 22% of the national budget to learning. "A nation that feeds its people but starves its intellect betrays its own potential. We must nourish minds as purposefully as we cultivate crops."

Faith, Humility & Accountability
President Bio's daily practice is reflection on how to be a better man, father, friend, and servant-hearted president. He believes humility tempers ambition and that accountability is the bond between a leader and those who place their trust in them. Leadership, for him, is above all an act of stewardship.
